Though it wasn’t written first, it’s placed first among the gospels. And though it is the most Jewish of gospels, with a deep love of the Old Testament, it was written by a despised tax collector! Somehow Matthew holds these paradoxes together and in doing so, offers us a rich and varied feast at the table of his gospel.
